The Truth About Diamonds

That's what I'm reading right now.

Written and published by Nicole Richie/Harper-Collins in 2005.

I just started reading this pop culture "novel" and even tho’ she may not write it herself (rumor has it she commissioned a ghost writer") it is certainly better than Paris Hilton’s Confessions of An Heiress. PH’s level was too bubble-headed even for me, however Nicole’s book I think is much better, not to say it was deep but at least it has insight, and made the reader feel for the kononnya fictional characters. What it goes to proof that whatever Paris can do, Nicole can do better, and to top it off I heard she has already laid six tracks to her CD.

I’ll let you know how it was when I finish it. Here's a sneak peek;

Chapter One: Reserved Seating

Chloe Parker would be a terrible role model if she were famous. Trouble is that she was about to be. It started innocently enough, or as innocent as you can get on the dance floor of one of the hottest clubs in L.A.
The nightclubs of L.A. are like soap operas, except they're not Days of Our Lives; they're more like Passions — crazy stuff happens, and no one bats a fake eyelash. There's always some bizarre drama that plays out every night, and everyone in the cast — I mean, everyone — is great looking, stoned, and/or drunk. It's like a traveling freak show that stars the youngest and hottest in Hollywood. It's about fun, and sex, and pseudo-danger.

Chloe Parker was practically born in a club. It's like she spontaneously generated one night in 1981 during a fourteen-minute remix. As a child, she could dance before she could walk and sing before she could talk. Dressed in a tie-dyed onesie and a tutu, her head a tangle of golden curls, Chloe was destined to haunt the clubs of her adoptive city as soon as humanly possible.

Chloe had been going to the hottest clubs in Hollywood since she was this many, wearing L.A. Gear sneakers everywhere she went. Like me, Chloe has always been tiny, which meant we could both sneak into The Viper Room under the noses of the bouncers when we were thirteen. She was a kid partying with adults who treated her like a peer. Every important marker of her life had to do with clubbing. She wore her first bra to a club. She went out without a bra for the first time to a club. Her first kiss, her first crush on a gay guy, the first time she saw Jimmy Choo sandals, the first time someone passed her a joint — all happened in a club.

As a kid, Chloe would stand behind the DJ booth and dance, and the DJ could tell if he had the vibe right just by monitoring her movements. Like Holly Golightly in Madonna-wannabe rags, Chloe had the ability to not only be in the moment, but to create it. It helped that she always gave herself little jobs to do to make everyone happier. She'd hand out Dixie cups of water if people were looking overheated, or she would fan them with the sleeve of one of the 12-inch records the DJ was playing. She was the Disco Granny reincarnated.

In those days, Chloe was like that — so pure, all heart and soul. To see her smile would have the same effect on a roomful of sweaty strangers as the DJ playing a classic, crowd-pleasing track. She could be like a little sliver of the sun — her glow lit them up.

Chloe's mailing address might have been her mom Peggy's place in Bel Air, but the place to find her — and more importantly the place where she was finding herself — was whatever party was hottest at the moment. That night, it was Mode, a converted church on Cahuenga just north of Hollywood. Unfortunately, all of us were discovering a new side to Chloe — a scary one.

Chloe didn't need drugs to have fun. I mean, drugs would be double-bad for an addictive personality like hers, and I think she knew it. But she was drawn to them for the same reasons any young person may be — drugs seemed glam, and exciting, and reckless. Being high was intriguing; it made her feel alive. Drugs were everywhere in every club. And drugs took the place of love.

But along with whatever her other drugs du jour were, Chloe was as addicted to the club scene as she was a part of it.

To get to our booth, Chloe aggressively stomped up the staircase of Mode, a multi-tiered architectural maze with flashing lights and music so loud it felt like it invaded you, like a virus. Just as everyone in L.A. had to climb the social ladder, Chloe and all the rest of us had to climb three flights of stairs to get to the VIP level at Mode. Sometimes, scaling the social ladder was easier and faster than making it up those stairs, which were usually choked with hangers-on, wasted fans, and undercover tabloid reporters. Chloe wasn't nationally famous yet, but she was a glittering part of the youth party scene, and reporters were smart enough to know that where there's smoke, there's fire.

On her way up the stairs, Chloe started to pass two Asian girls, one tall and the other short and squat, who were bobbing their heads to the end of Kanye West's Golddigger. They both wore hip-huggers and expensive-looking belly shirts. They were not holding drinks, and their pupils were not dilated. Even in her chemically altered state, Chloe pegged them immediately: They were definitely magazine reporters.

At Mode, people acted up, hooked up, and threw up, and the paparazzi stood outside to shoot the stars as they went in looking fabulous and staggered out totally gone. Guess which kinds of photos got published? You're right! Both kinds got published. From what I heard, an exclusive shot of a new couple could earn up to fifty grand from a celebrity weekly. The price would triple if the photogs could shoot inside, but the iron-clad rule was no cameras and no reporters in the clubs. That was part of what stoked the glamour and mystery. No one really knew what went on inside. The doormen played, too. They were judge and jury when it came to letting people in and keeping people out. That meant the warm-up act for the freak show usually started outside.

Guys with money? Yup. But the doormen tried to keep the ratio of guys to girls at about ten to one. They wanted all the Brad Pitt wannabes to open their wallets while competing for the handful of Angelinas.

Early Bedtime

Ever heard of the saying early to bed, early to rise, not true for the kumar family, early to bed, and can sleep until very late. Slept yesterday at about 9.45pm and Niki woke up at 8.30am whereas her mom and pop woke at 8am!! Guess sleepyheadnitis runs in the family genes!

Long live the King!

Tommorow the 26th of April will be the official coronation for the incoming King, who is the Sultan of Kelantan, for well today but tomorrow he will be the Agong. Long live the King! And it's not a holiday for my company tomorrow, coz...there's just too much work to be done. But on a positive note, think I shall take Monday off la-dee-da.

A New "V" Thai Eatery

alert! hungry people and elmo (Vicky's hhhmmm whatever shall I have pose??)

the food!

Last Friday, went to this new Thai restaurant in KK which served up the most authentic and delicious Thai food ever, with Thai-pop in the background well it was like eating in Bangkok itself. The food, mmmmm it was heavenly, we ordered the Tomyum Kung, Phad Thai (with Thai vermicelli!) and the staple Pineapple fried-rice (which thank goodness did not come in a pineapple! I hate those!!). The place is called V, and it's located at KK's Anggerik Eria Industrial area, a little drive after the third roundabout. Believe me, the serving looks humble but it packs a punch, or shall I say it packs a Thai box kick!

Spaghetti-O on the Kid's Menu

Vicky's gonna be working late today so it's just me & Niki for dinner just now. Went to my fave haunt Betty's Kitchen in KK, I absolutely am crazy for their Nyonya Laksa, yum! Ordered spaghetti-o for Niki since the kid at the next table was having that and it looked quite decent, I'm not quite sure whether Niki is the pie eating type, coz they have Shepherd's pie on the kid menu too. Mommy & daughter shared Coke.

We were happily gobbling down our food when the mommy from the next table (the one whom ordered the spaghetti for her daughter too) started screaming at her kid in mandarin, telling her why can't she just finish her food, she's getting so thin etc..etc.. and ironically a few days earlier I was reading this in a parenting mag, a kid will eat as much as she can there's no point forcing food down her throat coz he tummy is not as large as ours, simple logic and yet parents nowadays are obssessed with their kid having to eat all the time. According to the mag, 2 main meals plus 2 snacks is quite enough for the tyke. And well you should always make eating meals a fun and positive experience for the child. Well, read and learn, eh?

Phew!

Fuyoh dang busy day, it was meetings after meetings then have to rush to klcc to attend yet another meeting. Not gonna blog about the meeting coz it's sooooo exciting (not!!)..so how about a few photos to make up for it. How many of you have seen the KL skyline from the 36th floor of the Petronas Twin Towers, well here it is *points up*.. I sneakily took some photos a few moments before the meeting got on the way.

Halo!Halo!

Yup thought I'll start the week off on a good note, I'm usually mopping on a Monday.
The weekend flew by, (so like what's new??!!??) did heck of a lot of ...nothing, bet you didn't see that coming.
On Saturday morning woke up bright and early to see my dentist to get my crowning done on my post root canal molar, it teeth cutting if not for the LA would have hurt like a %$@*! but it didn't instead half my mouth was numb and when I slurped my kuehteow soup it made me get this tunnel like sensation.
Mohan & Barbara dropped by for a bit with some goodies, eh thanks guys! Appreciate it!! Domo Arigato alot alot.
Blog later my boss is calling for me *isshh!!* ..but
Have a productive week, y'all!

Morning rushover fever as usual lor!
Wish me luck as I drive home this evening *scared wei*

La Dolce Vita

The famous scene of Anita Ekberg in the Fontana di Trevi. This is one of the most celebrated images in cinema's history.

A beautiful film indeed but with tragic emotions within ~ watch it if you haven't

La Dolce Vita (Italian for "The Sweet Life") is a 1960 film directed by Federico Fellini. It is usually cited as the film that signals the split between Fellini's earlier neo-realist films and his later art films.

Set in Rome, Italy in the 1950s where Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni) covers the more sensational side of the news; movie stars, religious visions, and the decadent aristocracy. The film shows seven days and nights in the life of the reporter.

Marcello is living with Emma (Yvonne Furneaux), a woman who loves him and wants a traditional marriage, but she is possessive and shows little ability to understand his unarticulated search for value and meaning in his life. He has encounters with other women РAnouk Aim̩e as a beautiful, wealthy, and jaded friend/lover; Anita Ekberg as an American movie star named Sylvia. Marcello also briefly meets an unspoiled and charming girl working at a beachside restaurant.

Steiner (Alain Cuny), who has a loving family and success, is also suffering the same anomie in which Marcello is trapped. Later in the film, Marcello returns to Steiner's apartment: Steiner has shot his children and committed suicide. His ultimate expression of despair, the inability of this paragon to love enough, pushes Marcello over the edge. Instead of moving from journalism to the higher realm of writing he contemplated, he sells out to become a public relations hack, a drunk decadent party boy, now within the milieu that he previously saw as the outsider observing. In the end, he seems to have cut himself adrift on a sea of frivolity and self-disgust, with no real idea of how to find himself again.

Themes and motifs
In the film's opening sequence, Marcello and a photographer colleague, named Paparazzo, ride in a helicopter. They are following another helicopter carrying a gilded statue of Jesus, suspended from a cable. The statue is being flown to the Vatican. Along the way, Marcello's helicopter stops to observe a group of women sunbathing on a rooftop. Marcello asks the women for their phone number, and they ask him where the statue is being taken. The noisy engine of the helicopter precludes any mutual understanding. This motif of miscommunication replays itself throughout the film. The film also shows the presence of religious values and the Catholic church.

In the final scene of the film, Marcello and the girl from the restaurant meet again at the beach, separated physically by the tides, separated emotionally by his now defeated cynicism and her innocence.

Niki's Bear-bear

Niki got a new teddy bear which she lovingly calls "bear-bear". "Bear-bear" is a fluffy white snow dog with big round eyes and wears a ski-cap and a muffler around his neck, he is Niki's baby now, she feeds him and changes him and of course she puts him to bed with her when it's bedtime.
It's really nice seeing Niki learning to develop affection and be "the responsible one". And it's really funny seeing her feed "bear-bear", she'll be telling him "eat ... swallow"much like what Niki's daddy say to her when she's eating :-) *sniff* my baby's all grown up *wwaaaaahhhh*

A moment of silence

Let's observe a moment of silence for the massacre at Virginia Tech, it reminds me once again how crazy this world of ours has become. I pray for the victims and their families and friends, and I pray that a tragedy like this one shall become a symbol of how much we should not take the peace that we have here in Malaysia for granted.

A Pointless Post

Ok now, we've been reading so much (ok maybe only me) about tabloit-y stuffs right? So are you pro-Paris or pro-Nicole, it's shameless to admit but I'm on team Paris, as bimbotic and irrelevant as she is..

Papa Nara's Birthday @ Grand City PJ

teeheehee .. Mohan looking mafioso

the cake and the wifey-poo fed lovingly by the birthday boy (looked on by a pesky third wheel)

see, this is why I love candid shots!

group photo of everyone, see Niki & her mommy got same-same pose one

Had a grand old time at Grand City Restaurant, PJ.

That's where the whole gang convened to celebrated Papa Nara aka Bird Tata's birthday yesterday night. Such a hoot, so bising coz all the kids were there and running around, into each other, over each other and such. It's always wonderful to have everyone around. The mood was cheery, the ambience was warm and the best thing is that the family is all together, can never get better than that!

And ahah! I think Mohan looks so much better in the pix on top right ?!!? *points up* -- Mohan was complaining that he didn't look like his usual suave self in the picture that I posted under the Ambar's Wedding post! Being the budding photographer that I am, I like to capture the candid moments, so with candid it sometimes come together with goofy grins, wonky eyes & etc one lar.

The cake was Walnut Brownie *so yum* can pengsan dot com! Had two slices before I realized that my spare tyres were bulging out, so stopped myself before I devoured the next piece...which looks so bloody inviting, dang!

Ooopppsss a bit off topic there, so back to the birthday, after a really filling banana leaf meal of which Grand City is so popular for, we kumpuled all the kiddies together at the back of the restaurant to chaperone the cake, Ammu and I lit the candles and Yanu was in charge of holding the rather large cake while tthe rest of the kids will be walking together with the cake while singing Happy Birthday on top of their lungs. So the cake arrived safely at our table *phew* coz no one tripped (eh they're kids right and the cake was a 1.5kg one ok..) and we sang another round of Happy Birthday before than man of the hour blew out his sixty-six candles.

After cake, a long goodbye at the front entrance of the restaurant where lots of air kissing and hugs ensued before we finally said goodbye and all of us went back to our own homes really happy, I think it was partially the high that the food emitted. Coz the next thing I knew ~ me, Vicky & Niki got into our jammies and were in bed and unconscious before 11pm! Tired from eating, yo! Did I hear an oink, oink?

ps. a bit of marketing of the restaurant, they were superb hosts, all the waiters were extremely helpful, the food was scruptious and they even gave the kids a box of chocolates :-) That's a thumbs up in my book!

Genting Highlands baybeh!

We stayed at the FWH, which is not bad this time, we got the Superior Deluxe room a bit more expensive but worth every penny! We pernah stayed at the Standard room (double bluek!!) and then once we stayed at the Deluxe view (also bluek). But this time, since it’s Niki’s first trip I thought we deserve something nice, the picture in the website looks ok, of course I was a bit apprehensive also coz afterall it FWH, I mean c’mon!

And when we checked yesterday it I was pleasantly surprised. The room was nice and we had one that faced the Genting Hotel and the Theme Park and it was on the 21st floor so we were happy!

Niki absolutely loves the weather there, got her a white Mickey ski cap (so cute) and she looks so super cute in it!

Yesterday, we spent lots of time in the indoor theme park and was just lepaking, ate a whole lot of junk food,
and then, we had our lunch at Coffee Bean, everything tastes better in this weather! I kid you not!
Afterthat I even had Assam Laksa at the Food Market, it tastes so good, I think it’s got something to do with the weather it was 17 degrees out, damn cun!
We went on a whole lot of rides as well, I think we were more excited than Niki coz she was giving us the “been there, done that” look, and was hoping we do something more exciting already! She was eye-ing the roller-coaster but her Royal Princessness was a tad too short, maybe the next time baby.

But hoo-yeah it was a wonderful trip! Pix will be posted on Monday, and guess what today’s only Saturday, we’re checking out today, and the weekend’s still ahead, have a good one y’all over and out!

Up, Up and Away

It's Niki's first trip to Genting, so excited and happy clappy!
Update more when we get there! See ya!

Niki's Hearts McD's

Like many kids in her generation, Niki absolutely loves McD's. I remembered blogging sometime back that I said that Mac-neh-neh was her first words as opposed to the norm like mama, papa or mam-mam.

Till today she still fondly refers to McD's as Mac-neh-neh, I've tested her before and she can say McDonald's quite clearly but for some sentimental reasons known only to her she rather it calls Mac-neh-neh. Last evening, we had McD's and she came and told me, "Amma I love you", when she saw what I tapau-ed home for dinner. And sat there happily chewing down her McNuggets with sweet & sour sauce and fries. Got thumbs up for the food somemore, ... eh how come I didn't get a thumbs up also when I slaved over the stove to cook her super nutritious porridge or chicken soup *rolls eyes*.

Ambar's Wedding

Niki in action

Niki's cuz (1st pic : l-r) Zach, Yanu, Jaden, Lei & Darsha

Behold the photos from Ambar's wedding last Saturday.

The lines for the buffet was humongous, and me & Vicky ended up eating the vegetarian food which surprisingly was quite delish!

Ambar looks ravishing in her wedding saree, and moi was sweating like a hog in my silky one!

The critic

Now that Niki can speak quite abit, she has become quite the critic as well.
Yesterday, we finally got our hands on Denzel Washington's Deja Vu, obviously we bought the "original" copy lar must you still ask?
So we settled in with our variety of keropoks, kuacis, water for us and milk for the girl. Half way through she says not nice CD, change, not nice, we were like ??!!?? but we just shushed her and told her to watch it anyways, yeah we're bullies.
Anyways I think Niki was kinda right coz for a Jerry Bruckheimer/Tony Scott movie it did fell short of our expectations. Denzel & Jim Caviezal was flawless as usual but I think Adam Goldberg stole the show ~ he's quirky me likes!

Poker nite

Vicky came up with a brilliant idea of having a poker nite, one Saturday of every month at our place. But we had it on last night coz of Ambar’s wedding on Saturday, the whole gang, Siva & Joey, Mohan & Barbara plus the kids all came over and had a jolly good time with money exchanging hands very quickly at every uppance. The take was like RM30 for every hand!!! That's a lot of money to make within 8 minutes (length of time per hand!)

I’m not much of a card person but I am an alkie so instead of playing cards, I played the role of the hostess to the mostest and plied my guests with glasses after glasses of JD coke and the kids with cookies (which I shouldn’t have coz then all of them got a sugar high and was boucing off the walls except for the girls whom all slept by 11 inclusive of Niki)

A true blue alkie, I mixed ‘em drinks really good. I know, so rosak right! Tsk!Tsk!

Sorry no pictures coz after all it is an illegal activity right?

T'was Anbar's pre-wedding ceremony yesterday where all the womenfolk will go over to her house to give their blessings for her upcoming nuptials. After that of course true to Malaysian style there's food to be had. Vicky was the cameraman for the whole duration so he's behind the shutters. Niki was the good little helper, helping the bride-to-be, dispense gifts to those who came and participated in the ceremony.

for my husband

I'm bored

In the office now and feeling utterly bored!
Don't know what to do with myself.
Have pored through gossip rags and my eyes are now figgin tired coz I have my contacts on.
Wanted to wear my brown ones but accidently wore the grey ones and super clash with my top.
What I've learnt is, when one's bored, one has the tendency to talk bull as well.
On the bright side, gonna go home in 15mins! hooray! >_<

An anniversary, wedding and birthday looms

Happenings this week;
Thurs, 5th April : Vicky's mom and dad's wedding anniversary
Sunday, 8th April : Vicky's close neighbor's wedding
also on Sunday is my mom's birthday, she turns 59, and yup does not look a day over 40!

Chores and Whatnot

I have a slight problem with cleaning the house, my problem is I'm kinda obssessed in keeping everything spick & span and will freak out at a mere sight of a strand of hair on the tiled floor. After a hard day's work I'll come home and stress myself out more by finding things (yes you read it right I find things) to clean. So this my personal own OCD! And so Vicky said enough was enough and that he couldn't take it anymore and personally neither can I, and he made me plan out a schedule of chores. I'm pretty happy with the results and I simply adore the chores schedule that I drew myself with some help from Niki's colour pencils.
My weekends are now free from any cleaning and I can't even touch a duster if I do Vicky's gonna get me! So now, I'll do most of the housework on Mondays which includes sweeping, mopping, dusting and cleaning the bathrooms. Laundry days are Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays only. The rest of the days are doing nothing days except spending Q-time with Vicky & Niki.
I started the "chores schedule" yesterday, our home is sooooo clean coz I scrubbed, dusted, swept and mopped everything properly (I think cleaning gives me a high!) and I now feel pretty good knowing that I don't have to do anything much for the rest of the week. I guess this was what I really needed to curb my obssessive compulsive behaviour on cleanliness. There must be a stop to this coz at the end of it if I do it like what i did previously it's only make me all exhausted at the end of the day. So I must thank my bunny for helping me see the light at the end of the broom.
Today, well today it's nothing to do day!

Niki Gets Jiggy

Nix gets jiggy with a short ditty

Mondays

My boss is not in today, but there’s a tender thing I need to kowtim by today as well. Today’s Monday, and Monday never starts off on the right foot have you noticed? Anyways, I’m feeling sleepy and not so high-powered today. My hair’s all wrong (damn bad hair day) and my tea tastes funny. I’m ranting without a subject and I have 2 meetings this afternoon and an exhibition to organize and look into, costings need to be made up & such. So if you can woop-dee-doo in a melancholic manner, yup that’s how I feel.

On the bright side I’m wearing a new watch today (perks up a bit).

And my sis is starting her new job today (mental note: to call her & find out how’s it going).. so Good luck and break a leg at the new place, well technically not that new but you know what I mean!

A Munchkin weekend

Our munchkin is now 29 months old & more mischevious than ever!

here we are at PD last weekend watching an elvis impersonator
