Mid-Autumn aka Mooncake festival is coming

How time flies, time and time again I use this phrase, I feel as if it was only yesterday I ate mooncakes from Tai Thong and now the time is coming again. Ammu bought Niki a Mickey lantern so we're gonna take it for a little dry-run later this evening. For the kiddults I got 'em paper lanterns, so all of us can have a go!

But gotta wrap up early lo..coz now is the Happy Ghost Festival as well .. being Chinese gotta respect that lo..

For those who're "bananas" like I, here's some history on how the Mooncake festival came about, like all Chinese tales, its quite romantic.

Originally named the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Moon Festival is one of the most important holidays celebrated by Chinese communities around the world. Let us first explore the creation of mooncakes.
Mooncakes earned their popularity during the
Yuan Dynasty (1200 A.D.- 1368 A.D) when, as legends say, the Mongols who had established the Yuan Dynasty were too oppressive, and were overthrown by the Chinese with the help of this simple dessert.

Since Mongols did not eat mooncakes, the Chinese took advantage of this cultural difference and planned a revolt against them. Leaders of the revolts distributed mooncakes, under the pretense of celebrating the emperor's longevity, to other Chinese people. The mooncakes held secret messages baked within the skin, informing people to revolt on the 15th of the 8th moon, also the Mid Autumn festival. The rebellion was successful and mooncakes were forever kept a national tradition of China.

"When the moon is full, mankind is one" -- In China, the full moon has always represented the gatherings of friends and family. Thus, Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions. On this night, families will go together to scenic spots and parks for moon appreciation parties, and eating mooncakes.

Traditionally, Moon Cake Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month in observance of the bountiful Autumn harvest. This year, Mid Autumn Festival is celebrated on September 18. Although old rituals are no longer followed, families continue to gather for a day to relax and eat moon cakes. Upon this occasion, the legend of the Moon Goddess, CHANG-O, is often told to children.

Once upon a time there was a famous archer, Hou Yi, who with his arrows was able to slay mankind’s worst enemies, ferocious beasts that inhabited the earth. Yi was married to Chang-O, a beautiful but inquisitive woman who had been an attendant of the queen mother of the west before her marriage. Now at this time, there were 10 suns that took turns circling the earth-one every 10 days. One day, all 10 of the orbs circled, together, causing the earth’s surface to burn and threatening mankind. The wise emperor of China summoned Yi and commanded him to kill but one of the suns. This Yi proceeded to do. Upon the completion of his task, Yi was rewarded with a pill, the elixir of life, and advised: "make no haste to swallow this pill, but first prepare yourself with prayer and fasting for a year." Being a wise man, Yi took the pill home and hid it under a rafter while he began healing his spirit, In the midst of this, Yi was summoned again by the emperor.

While her husband was gone, Chang-O noticed a beam of white light beckoning from the rafter. She followed it and a fragrant perfume, discovered the pill and swallowed it. Immediately, Chang-O found she could fly. Just at that moment her husband returned home, realize what had happened and began to reprimand his wife. Chang-O flew out the window into the sky. Yi sped after her, bow in hand, and the pursuit continued halfway across the heavens. Finally, Yi had to return to the earth because of the force of the wind.

His wife reached the moon and there, breathless, she coughed and part of the pill fell from her mouth. Now, the hare was already on the moon and Chang-O commanded the animal to take pestle and mortar and pound another pill so that she return to earth and her husband. The hare is still pounding.

As for Yi, he built himself a palace in the sun as Yang (the sun and the male principle), Chang-O as Yin (the moon and the female principle).

Once a year, on the 15th day of the full moon, Yi visits his wife. That is why the moon is full and beautiful on that night.

The Greens and the Lights

lights abound in KK

the "si-fu" at the range

Merdeka is in four days' time.

Independant Malaysia is turning the big 5-0.
KK is all decked out in a dazzling array of lights come night time.
One type of which looked rather like a *inside joke* ______ pointer
Anyways, I'm feeling super patriotic and feel blessed to be living in M'sia. This feeling doesn't come very often but I think we should start appreciating our motherland .. though the govt still sucks but that's another whole subject all together.

The whole country's gearing up for the celebration this year, and there's a tinge of excitement in the air, a feeling that I have not felt for a very long time. Since it's making a comeback I think it's a good sign for our country..

Sunday was a super lazy day, woke at 10-ish.

Went for breakfast at Jin Man's, ate saito fishball noodles ..which was yummy..*slurp*

Went to the driving range for a bit with Vicky then off I went for my pedi appointment at Refranc's

After pedi which was 2.5 hours later, Vicky was still at the range ...met him back there again and promptly harrassed him into finishing so that we can go eat..it was already four pm so had pastries and cakes at secret recipe..

Then went for an uber relaxing hairwash @ Refranc's ..wanted to follow up with him & her facials but thalgo's was already closed by then..

Vicky went to Joy Luck while I went home to relax abit..

Texted him at 7-ish informing him that I am craving betty's nyonya laksa..and went to betty's for exactly that..

Then watched tv and fell asleep in front of it...

It goes without saying that ..we had the most wonderfully slow Sunday...*heavenly*

Weekend is Here!

Yesterday was a headache gone actually, completed an ISO recertification audit! It was a huge deal and now tra-la-la, all I have to do is wait for my fee! I have been slaving on that particular project for the past half month and was intensified by last minute work two days ago! Apart from my day job, I also freelance for ISO consultation -- if any of you are looking for one for your company look no further.

Next month I have to conduct a training and some consultation work and hopefully wrap up for this year and concentrate more on my day job!

Anyways tra-la-la..and woop-dee-do, the weekend's 'ere and I'm looking forward to some well deserved r & r, beginning with a pedi & mani tomorrow..heeheehee...after I send Niki off to Aunty Barbara's. Aunty Barbara is treating Niki to the Royal London Circus which is in town tomorrow evening, thanks Aunty Barbara! And so Mummy's gonna go do some pampering :-)

Have a good one y'all!!

Like I was saying

..I am still reeling from the fact that Niki is schooling already.
..Niki sang for me & her daddy, yesterday, with crystal clear pronunciation;
One two buckle my shoe
Three four shut the door
Five six pick up stick
Seven eight lay them straight
Nine ten begin again.
Can also sing head & shoulders knees and toes; if she the mood hits her.
Ok back to work.
Lunch was good, too good, now feeling a wee bit sleepy, wonderful .. and I have tons to do

Songs & Rhymes

After attending school for 2 months, Niki is coming along wonderfully.
And being curious and inquisitive, she loves to learn, I'm still reeling from the fact that she's now school going.
Ok my boss is calling for lunch, gotta continue this later then.

The princess and I

Niki and her Mummy

Last Monday, we went for an impromptu birthday party for Devan who turns one. Devan is a chindian kid in every sense of the word coz he converses in Cantonese, coz he lives in HK. His version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star is in Cantonese as well. Niki and I were more than amused. Coz the only version she & I know is the England one.

Anyways, I don't have many a photo with Niki and hubby dearest took one of us. Don't mind the chubby cheeks it was that time of the month plus I had two helpings of the vegetarian food that thet were serving. Kononlah don't want to eat meat coz wanna diet but makan twice the usual amount instead. I'll never win the battle of the bulge I tell you!

So How 'Bout It, Ma

Niki the Water baby

Niki's been consistently asking us to send her for swim classes. And I mean every word when I say consistent.

Monday morning, "Mummy I wanna go swimming classes"
Me, "Ok baby"

Tuesday morning, "I wanna go swimming classes"
Me, "Ok well see baby"

It went on Wednesday and Thursday as well

And today, "Ma, send me to swimming classes"
Me, "You really want swim classes?"
She, "Yes, Mummy and I wanna wear my swimming suit"
Me, "Ok, baby, Mummy'll put out the tub for you tomorrow and you can go splishy splashy ok, now go to school first"
She, "Ok mummy, thank you!"

..and when I sent her to school today, I brought along a tube of smarties for her to share out with her little buddies as well, and the girl shouted "Thank you, Mummy before running into her school" .. Too sweet, can pengsan!

Well back to the topic of swimming, what I'm gonna do tomorrow is, put out the big water tub for her in the garden with lukewarm water and her floaties, and she can splash there till she shrivel up -- as for classes, well she'll have to turn 3 first, that's in 3 months' time ..then we'll send her for classes at the Kota Permai Club -- maybe!

What type are you?

Met Linda from Poppy Pet House today during breakfast at my usual haunt. Got into a conversation about what type of dog will be suitable since she's having a sale for toy dogs at RM999 inclusive of its certificate at her shop. Those on sale are shih tzu by the way. And she suggested that a poodle will be a good choice since even though they're hairy they do not shed apparently. So what do you think people, a poodle? Oh yeah, and poodles are extremely loyal and worships the ground their owners walk on.. heeheehee.
The pic above is that of a mini poodle, and nope they don't have to look like those in TV with the afro look instead their fur can be styled into a lamb look for easier maintenance. Cute huh?

The kid's all grown up.

Yesterday, we got Niki's school pic which was taken with the rest of her classmates. Niki was sitting in the middle in the first row, and we got a taste of how much the kid has grown. Ho-hum feels like only yesterday she was a baby and now baby's all grown and have made a bunch of friends in school. And yup' she's a popular kid to boot, even those kids in K1 and K2 (the 5 to 6 year olds, knows her by name!)
Me & Vicky had a chat with the school pricipal to just gauge how Niki's doing in school, bottomline is all is good and she's adapting really well and is quite independant. And today, I sopke to her class teacher as well to make sure that she's adapting well, she is, actually and well all this comments just makes all feel warm and fuzzy inside.
*sniff*

A little R & R

Gonna head for some much needed R & R but poor me will be "working" from a laptop from the said holiday spot. It's been ages since we went up to PD, gonna head out tomorrow for 2 days. Ahh.. fun in the sun for Niki and her Daddy!

Marching that makes you go .. Awwww..

Today as we sent Niki to school, yeah today both me & Vicky sent her to school, just to make a fuss..and we were late so had to pack her breakfast on the go, she requested for sausages so I made her those and cut them into itty bitty cube size for her to chow later. It was 8.45am and they have a rehersal for the Merdeka Lantern festival that the school is gonna organize in conjunction with our national day.. and the kids will be marching and singing to that song.. that starts ... Tanggal 57... a really upbeat patriotic song.
And Niki and her class will be in the march to.. Niki's been practicing her march at home but to see it live with the rest of the kids .. well that's one of those things that makes you go ...aaawwww ain't that cute. So that's exactly how we felt.. so proud of our leet Nik.

I'm so frustrated right now coz my blog has got no photos! Dang the thang! Ai sei try again la .. la dee da ..

Hanging with the girls

Wow-wee the weekend just zoomed by, Ammu & my sis temaned me & Niki through the weekend, and when girls get together, there's only one thing on our agenda, on Saturday combed Subang Parade and yesterday me, Niki & Aunty Daph did Curve and Ikano. Niki really luurrvveess shopping, she's well on her way to becoming a shopaholic soon, and no thanks to her Mummy as well.
Niki despite being a bit tired trooped on, like a real shopaholic would, and in my daughter I'm beginning to see buds of a fashionista as well, she chooses her own duds y'know. And have a cute sense of style. Daddy's pocket gonna get very light when this one grows up.
