Niki's 1st Ouchie Pix

Niki's First Tumble

.. major tumble that is accompanied by a scrapped knee, we knew it was just a matter of time, and our Niki walks kind of wonkily most times, so it was seriously just a matter of time.. she was out on her evening walk Friday, and she fell frontwards, there was a moment of silence until she screamed on top of her lungs & really bawled..
..my heart goes out to the tot but I know that this will be a first and that she'll have more tumbles when ..
1) she learns to cycle
2) she learns to blade
3) she learns to run

I applied savlon and kissed her injured knee and was feeling better after a while, my Niki has grown up..

I've posted the pics of our weekend on top *points finger up*

Saturday's Lightning Awareness & Safety Workshop

mc-ing

group photo with students

So I was yet again pulled in to mc a lightning safety workshop for school children and senior citizens last saturday, felt horrid I had to get to up early & leave both my honeys in bed. But *pppfftt* it's for a good cause so I sort of happily went about it. It was held at the MPSJ auditorium & I spoke aimlessly for a bit before warming up. No food so brain didn't work properly plus it was way too early. The workshop was fun tho, the kids asked a lot of questions & looked really intrigued, any of u wanna take my place in the office , call me!

A mini Keyboard for Niki

I got this colourful leet keyboard for Niki recently and she loves it! Could she be a concerto pianist in the making? We'll have to wait & see. Yesterday night we attended the Rotary fellowship dinner and Niki had the chance to sit by a piano which the host's daughter was playing on, thanks Melissa for showing Niki the ropes and Niki, even if she was playing piano gibberish held her own pretty well complimenting Melissa's higher notes with her own lower notes. So cute can pengsan dot com.
Ahh..the kid's got music in her veins, must've gotten it from the Daddy, xoxo

"Tai Chow" @ Poh Yap

..another post about food! but of course!! love food,

feeling happy 'coz just had unagi for lunch, yum!!
so back to the post, a couple of nites ago we went out for tai chow near our home;
tai chow if translated directly is big fry, it means that once you've ordered your food which usually consists of rice with a few dishes, they fry it there and then for you, so when the food arrives it's still super hot.

I love the fish fillet in curry paste and leaves, yum
and this place has one of the most kow-a-bunga kopi peng ever!

Aunty Daphne & I had the kopi peng and then got a really nice caffeine high :-)

Niki and her Daddy shared a glass of barley which Niki helped spice up with her rice and meehoon. Still both of them finished the drink O_0

It's gonna be a slow day today

..and I forgot to bring my mobile, so have been left to post without pics that I took yesterday evening while out for dinner at this "tai chow" place near our home. So gonna do some random words only post to satisfy my blog addiction.
..and yeah I hate work today, the bl***dy network administrator copped an mc today and I need to take care of the server stuff plus her daily roboty work stuff like sorting faxes, etc. I sort of sound bitchy right, that's because I hate doing routine-y stuffs *gawd*
So to put my mind off these mundane stuffs I only have to look no further than Clientcopia : Stupid Client Quotes for a cure.

These are my favourites :

"We love it like this, but we were wondering if we could change the font, the color, and move a few things around?"
"I need more pesshht peesshht chuttt chutt papapapa on this animation."
"Please change the "SUBMIT" button to "DONE". Submit sounds too kinky."
"We want it to be black, but could you not make it so dark?"
"Just because we signed off on the proof doesn't mean we were happy with it!"
"Can you do it like in the Matrix...you know with numbers, zeros and ones, and glowing light, like
in the Matrix, you know?"
"Can you print out a copy of every page in the website and post it to us? We need to fax a copy
to our US office so they can have a look at it..."
You: So who will go to this site and for what reason?
Client: I don't know
You: Well what is the purpose of this site!?!?
Client: I don't know
"Um, could you make it more... i don't know... enhanced?"
"Can you make the background constantly change colors? I want people to know that we are fun and exciting."
"Don't use too much red, our tests show that red downloads slower."
cracks me up everytime..feeling all better ^_^

Our Fab Weekend in PD Tiara

We had a fantastic weekend in PD, it was fun from the word "let's go"
Took the "scenic" route once we exited in Seremban, which is the first & last time, yeah baby? hehehee.
When we reached the parking lot Niki was so super excited that she was screaming her lungs on, we sure have a hyper one, so we checked in and headed out straight to the pool.
It was just the 3 of us, it was fun and we really had a wonderful time hanging out together. There was just us, the sun and the man-made sea of course. Niki loved every minute of it coz she's an aqua baby. And has the tan to show for it! And oh, the weather it was gorgeous!
Vicky played water volley ball with some of the guests and it was totally fun.
And when we weren't in the water we will be eating which is just typically us! Can't wait to head out again.
On the way home, Niki was so tired she passed out while drinking her milk, poor baby, but I know sher really enjoyed herself. And I really enjoyed hanging out with my family, I love those two to bits! xoxo.

Sleepy Heads

We did another movie nite on a weekday and ended up waking up really late today, can you imagine I reached office at 9.30am! It's actually not so bad right? But all of us, Vicky, Niki & me we really looked like sleepyheads this morning!

But She'sThe Man, was really funny! It's your usual teeny-bopper kind of movie but it was really fun, clever and abdolutely hilarious plus its adapted from shakespeare's the twelve night so ok wut got some edu-lit & all. I read it like years ago and it's one of those shakepeary stuff that I really enjoyed, and the movie was a good adaptation.
Anyways tra-la-la-la, the weekend's upon us and we're going off to PD for a beachy-weekend!!

xoxo

Superman The Movie and Superman II : part two

 Posted by Picasa

Superman The Movie & Superman II

All 3 of us (yeah, the little munchkin included) watched 2 Superman movies back to back yesterday, it was wonderful!!! The story gets abit cheesy sometimes but what the heck, we just enjoyed it for what it is and I personally think it so much better than the current Superman Returns.
Below is the review of the 1st movie,
Soundtrack:
Rating: 5 out of 5
Close your eyes and turn on the theme song. Try to imagine what's going on and see if you agree with me. John William's wonderful theme song of Superman starts out with a feeling that you're far away in space. As it grows in volume, it builds up to a powerful crescendo that reminds me of the exploding Krypton. This is followed by what sounds like, and gives me an image of, the birth of Kal-El. The music seems to guide me through his many accomplishments. As he grows up, the pace is quickened and the sound grows louder until he becomes Superman, at which point the main part of the theme is played. The music actually makes it sound like Superman is flying, going higher and higher. It goes back at this point and repeats itself, sounding better than the first time. Then, it starts to go down to a softer side, that sounds like it might be Superman's meeting with Lois on her apartment terrace. After this, the song builds itself up again, recycling itself over and over again until it starts getting faster and more triumphant. Suddenly, I feel like Superman's going to come out of the speakers and collide with me as the powerful crescendo booms even louder this time.
If you did as I suggested and listened to the song with your eyes closed, letting your mind open up to the theme, you might have heard what I've heard: a story inside a song. As usual with John Williams, who also composed the Star Wars and Indiana Jones theme songs, his themes are always powerful and hard to get out of your mind because they're so catchy and wonderfully done.
Special Effects:
Rating: 4 out of 5
The special effects in "Superman" seemed to get better and better as the movie progressed. At the beginning of the movie, scenes like Clark racing the train looked pretty simple and not all that great. However, once Superman appeared, the effects were astonishing. The part where Superman saves Lois and catches the helicopter and then gracefully lands on top of the Daily Planet building is amazing. A few examples of the really good special effects were: the flying scenes, Superman invading Luthor's lair, and the chase after the warhead, which was superb!
Cast/Acting Performances:
Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent/Superman
Rating: 5 out of 5
There could not have been a better choice for the Man of Steel. None of the other "Supermen" have ever been as good as Christopher Reeve. When Mr. Reeve put on the famous blue, red and yellow suit he looked exactly like the Last Son of Krypton, almost like he had walked right out of the comic book. His Clark Kent performance was superb! The way he could slouch down and make a quivering, higher voice when he was Kent and then straighten his back and speak much deeper as Superman, was a trick that no other Superman actor has done as effectively. One could actually believe that Clark Kent and Superman were two different people with these changes and the addition of the large glasses and the hair parted differently.Throughout all four movies there was always a beautiful performance by Reeve. His weakness to Kryptonite, his exciting fight with the Phantom Zone criminals, his battle against himself and his always popular smile to the viewer as he flew around the Earth, at the end of each movie. I'm convinced that what made the Superman movies "really good," was him. I believe that the reason I own three of the four Superman movies is because, even if the story wasn't very good, it had the "real" Superman in it and I could never refuse a chance to watch Superman in action.
Margot Kidder as Lois Lane
Rating: 3 out of 5
One of the less wiser casting decisions for the movie was for the role of Lois. Compared to Noel Neill, Phyllis Coates and Teri Hatcher, Margot Kidder is a distant fourth. Her constantly scratchy voice that gets worse in each of the movies, almost hurts your ears when you hear it. No wonder Superman can always hear her when she's in trouble! Another thing was the constant "run into trouble and then scream for help". She hardly ever defended herself like the other Lois' and wasn't very intelligent or sneaky like the Lois Lane every Superman fan is familiar with. The constant formula was to tell Clark to "grab the bull by the horns and do something", yet she goes out, just gets herself in trouble and then expects Superman to come along and save her. When the earthquake was coming in the first movie, why didn't she get out of her car? And then she blames Superman when he gets there. I mean, what does Supes see in her? She's just annoying and always in the way.
Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor
Rating: 5 out of 5
A wonderful performance for the great Lex Luthor! Gene Hackman's cruel and intelligent Lex Luthor matches what we saw in the original Superman comics. His jokes and sneakiness are always fun and his constant partnership with his idiotic henchman Otis is very entertaining. His deals with the Phantom Zone criminals, his Kryptonite trick he plays on Superman and his defeat at the hands of the Man of Steel is worth watching.
Story
Rating: 3 out of 5
The problem with this story was a plot hole. A major plot hole. The scene where Superman turns back time ruins the whole movie. It was going so well and then this had to happen. Superman turns back time to save Lois and then goes back to Earth and saves her. One problem. Time should continue in its regular flow. The dam should burst again, the school bus should almost fall off the Golden Gate bridge, and the train should be missing railroad in front of it. So Supes goes and saves Lois and while he does this, the school bus goes over the side, the train crashes and the water from the dam covers most of California while killing Jimmy Olsen, who falls off. All this to save a badly played Lois? Of course this doesn't happen, which makes it extremely bizarre. One other thing bothered me. We have this amazing origin of Superman and all of a sudden it stops. After he flies with Lois, she immediately goes away to California, Superman is no big deal any more and we move on to the Lex Luthor part of the story. They should have made this flow better. Instead, it stops and then resumes, but on a different course. Just like time, at the end of the movie.Okay, maybe an "Average" rating isn't fair, but these two things really took away from the movie. Other than that, though, the origin was done very well and the dialogue in the movie was priceless.
Closeness to the Comics
Rating: 4 out of 5
The movie followed the (first series) comic books pretty well. It had Lex Luthor who is not rich, but instead always hiding out and coming up with some sinister plot, it had Superman being kind and friendly and kept the costume like it was in the comics. The story was a typical Superman story from the first series comic books, except the time anomaly and it gave Superman the same powers that he has in the comics. Many of the things in this movie were later used in the second series of comic books. Examples are: the creation of the Fortress of Solitude (pretty close), the messages from Jor-El and the attitude of Lois Lane.
The Whole Experience/Superman
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
It was undoubtedly the best of all of the Superman movies, but it lacked a good ending. The story really hurt itself when it came up with the "time-turning-backwards" idea. The acting, for the most part, was good and the soundtrack was wonderful. The special effects were enjoyable. It is certainly a movie to pick up and watch if you haven't seen it. It's also the type of movie that you can watch more than one time and still enjoy it.
And then here's the review of the 2nd movie
Special Effects:
Rating: 4 out of 5
The special effects in "Superman II" were every bit as good as those present near the end of "Superman". I enjoyed witnessing the final climactic battle against the Phantom Zone criminals and the special effects made the fight scenes exciting and entertaining. One especially cool scene includes General Zod smashing into a Coca-Cola sign and being caught in the explosion. Also, the heat vision scene where Supes reflects Zod's heat vision back at him with a mirror, from a gasoline-filled truck, and the billboard behind him, which originally says "Some Like it Hot: Cool It Air Conditioning Systems" is burned away, and all that is left behind is "Cool It." The flying is another aspect of the movie that is spectacular and incredibly believable, as is Zod walking on water and the carnage and destruction of the tanks and various weapons that attack the criminals of the Phantom Zone throughout the movie.
Cast/Acting Performances:
Terrance Stamp as General Zod
Rating: 4 out of 5
Stamp's performance as the cunning and evil leader of the "Phantom Zoners" made Lex Luthor almost seem like the good guy. His acting showed off Zod's insane demands and deadly power that would give him such an advantage against the people of Earth and even Superman. Terrance Stamp played his role well, showing off the ever-confident and always plotting Zod, who would stop at nothing to crush everything in his grip. One of the many interesting aspects of the story of the Kryptonians is their need to learn about Earth and its inhabitants. Zod seems to begin to notice the different powers that the Earth's sun has granted them. It is also interesting to witness his discussions with Ursa, as they try and decipher Superman's weaknesses and the human beings' way of life.
Sarah Douglas as Ursa
Rating: 4 out of 5
Almost an equivalent of Zod, Sarah Douglas' Ursa helped to complete a very interesting and intriguing aspect of the movie. The tension between Lois and her is very interesting to watch, as are her discussions, which are based on figuring out what human beings are. One of the most entertaining things, however, is Ursa's continued fascination of symbols. Ursa, although extremely clueless as to what is going on, is obviously the most interested in the explanation of the events that occur. Ursa was very well acted and performed, never faltering the evil and wicked persona of a member of the Phantom Zone.
Jack O'Halloran as Non
Rating: 3 out of 5
Okay, this one's a little hard to determine. Especially since he had no speaking lines throughout the entire movie. Nevertheless, he served as an important part in fighting the Man of Steel, and, although he was extremely stupid and clumsy, the actor portrayed this well.
Story
Rating: 3 out of 5
The problem with this story was a plot hole. A major plot hole. Do those two sentences sound familiar? They should. They are the same two sentences that I used for Superman I, and there's good reason, also. How did Superman get his powers back? How did Superman get a car to go to the diner near his Fortress of Solitude? How does Lois get back to Metropolis? How could the director leave these parts out? The only clue that the audience is given on how Supes gets his powers back, is by a green crystal that created the Fortress of Solitude to begin with. So what? What does that have to do with anything? Plus, Lara already told him that there was no way to get his powers back after he lost them. We simply see Clark looking at the green crystal and the next scene features him flying outside of the Planet office, challenging Zod to "step outside". Why did they do this to a movie that was going so well? Although, very slow in getting to the part where Superman faces the Kryptonians, the end scenes are worth it. One more question, yeah, I know, I've asked a lot: Why did Superman not check back on his country after a while? Zod practically takes over Earth while Superman is with Lois!
Closeness to the Comics
Rating: 2 out of 5
Not too good. How many new super powers were introduced in this installment? Let's see... levitating powers (Zod picks up the sheriffs gun by using the "force"), magic kisses (that erase one's memory), the ability to teleport and show mirror images of oneself, and many more. These were never in the comics and they just kind of sneak their way into this installment. If they had at least shown them in the first movie, it wouldn't have been as bad, but they just kind of appear, without rhyme or reason, breaking the audiences' imaginary boundaries of how Superman will deal with them. You begin to try and figure out how Supes will deal with these problems, based on the powers you know that he has and then, suddenly, they introduce some new power that has nothing to do with what you've seen before! The final thing that puts this down a few notches, however, is the fact that: Superman does NOT kill. (I'm sure it's written in stone somewhere) Even if he DID kill, it would only be because he had no other choice. With no powers, the Phantom Zone criminals could have been placed in jail! Yet, Supes seems to casually eradicate the Phantom Zone criminals at the end. He crushes Zod's hand, picks him up and throws him against a distant wall, causing him to fall in the abyss. Lois pushes Ursa off and Nod commits suicide, by accident. Superman could have saved all three of these villains, but he chose not to.
The Whole Experience/Superman II
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Superman II was an excellent sequel to the first Superman movie. It completed the circle of the beginning of the first movie, in which Zod swears that Jor-El and his family will "bow down before him". Luthor is wonderful and devious, adding more fun to the movie, along with some humor. Also, Superman finally confronts a problem in which he must use his brains to stop a group that, with their powers combined, are more powerful than he. Finally, everything works out in the end, bringing the audience another wonderfully entertaining Superman movie.
And we have 2 more to watch ie. Superman III and IV, can't wait! Can't believe we're such nerds ^_^

Where'd You Go

Video Code provided by VideoCodeZone.Com

I absolutely love this song, since I first heard it at Fort Minor's concert few months' back, Mike Shinoda really did sink his heart into this, and it's one of the best track on the The Rising Tied album - take a listen

Niki's First Golf Lesson

We were at 7-eleven yesterday afternoon when I noticed that they carried a toddler golf set, unable to help ourselves we bought Niki her first set.

So Daddy and baby had their first lesson, Niki loved it coz’ she’s seen her Daddy play, and you know what, that girl is a natural, her stance and poise was perfect but she needs to improve her swing abit. No worries, at the rate she’s going she’ll be a pro in no time. Daddy is already planning to take her driving, and both of them looked so cute at it. I’m sure Niki can’t wait for her next lesson ;-) Of course a couple of times Niki got really excited and clubbed her Daddy a few times heeheehee xoxo

Dinner @ Kheng's Kopitiam KK

So yesterday I dressed Niki in a yellow sam-fu and took her out for dinner at a new kopitiam that has just opened in KK called Kheng's Kopitiam, it has a similar concept to Uncle Lim’s, Old Time, Kluang Kopitiam types offering coffee, tea, cham, toasted kaya bread, curry laksa, lam mee etc.

Ok we waited like 15 mins for the food which I think is slightly too long but since it’s opening day I guess they can be excused for that right, but the thing is the food kinda sucked. Aunty Daphne ordered Fried Rice and it tasted blah! I ordered Emperor’s Noodle and Indomee made at home without any extra ingredients tastes better. But the drinks were ok lah, Vicky wanted ice-blended but the machine was broken?!!? So settled for a cham (mixture of coffee & tea with ideal milk)

But Niki enjoyed herself as usual, she obviously liked the Emperor’s noodles since it’s “kon lo” style and the place was lined with mirrors so Ms Vanity truly has a great time. xoxo

Niki's Collage : May'05 and Now

I'm so amazed as to how much our little munchkin has grown, she's now a 20-month old toddler, the first pic was taken way back in May '05 when she's all of 6 months old, all I can say is wow! xoxo

Niki Loves BKT

We were heading out to dinner last evening, and had a sudden craving for BKT, went to our regular joint and it was closed, so spun around and found another BKT shop in KK called Ah Toa Seafood BKT and we were like ok, why not we give it a try, it was nice and the soup was herbally but not as good as our regular shop.
So we settled in and ordered a single helping of normal BKT with ribs and lean meat & Vicky ordered "Chu Kiok Choe" which is translated as Pork Leg in Vinegar, sounds gross but tastes good lah, as do most Malaysian food. One thing special tho they not only offer white rice but also oily rice & yam rice (the yam rice was yum)
The one thing is our Niki loves BKT, how many kids her age can actually even like the smell, I remember hating it as a kid, and I didn't touch BKT until I was well into adulthood. But Niki just loves it, she loves mixing her rice with the soup and she'll polish off half a bowl of rice like that. So I reckon she's special or she's just really chee-na one but it's all good and we love her just the way she is BKT, Chinese Tea and all! xoxo

Foodies to the core

The food in Bangkok is absolutely heavenly..heavenly I tell you..
The past few times we were we were totally entralled with the yumminess of the food,
and the tom yum goong there is a firecracker I haven't tasted anything like that in KL, ever!
I went to Thai Express in The Curve & ordered Som Tam omg, it tasted like something I can whip up myself and the Pad Thai .. well not the same no matter how much I try to think that's its the same to satisfy my craving for it.
so to me it's not a shopping paradise tho JJ is pretty cool but it's a foodies' haven, and you thought I meant football didn't ya from the title ;-p

Khareyana Spa PJ

So me & Vicky went over to Khareyana spa last Saturday, we had a bite to eat at Lotus PJ State, I had one of the best meehoon goreng I've ever eaten, there, totally yum!!!! Dropped Niki off at her Amama's and just a short drive away is Kharayena spa, it's actually after the roundabout at Assunta and situated in a private bungalow house with lots of trees and bamboo ferns shading the place, it looked so inviting, and that's only the outside. We were ushered into the waiting lounge (since we made an appointment) changed into their slippers and I gingerly fished thru a goss mag, there's always time for goss. Then the host came and double checked our reserved package. We took the "Dara Aroma Putih" body treatment package.
Then they ushered us into our private room to change before the treatment starts off, it was so much fun not to mention really really relaxing, firstly we were pampered by hydrophil treatment followed by a scrub, a shower, a body steam then followed by 60 mins of oil massage (heavenly!!) then a milk bath, shower off and them they lap on body lotion. We were pampered, our body's pampered, our senses were pampered, the whole place smelt of lavendar. It was easy on the eyes, everything was so pretty. So beautiful, so calm and serene.
We sorted of floated out of the private couples room they had us in, it was even drizzling abit when we trot out of the room, perfect! They brought us umbrellas tho' which I thot was really thoughtful
Then they served us fruits and ginger tea in the lounge.. we paid up and then left for home, we picked up Niki first tho from Vicky's mom's place.
But if you ask me will I do it again, I'll say yes !!!! I'm hooked forever gonna go try out Puri Santi's spa treatment next..can't wait hmmmm when can I go? maybe next month ..heeheehee. It's good to have this kind of pampering once a month, the treatment centre's words ok..not mine so I'm gonna be a good little lamb and listen ;-p

Niki's MTV

My Niki loves MTV of all sorts but currently she's hooked on music videos from this film called Ghajini, I saw the film myself it's really not bad but it's borrowed heavily from Christopher Nolan's Memento. But all in all I guess the director did a good job in injecting the Indian flavour to it especially on its songs, a particular one that Niki likes is the chicken song aka Suttum Vizhi, it's rather catchy and fun.

Here's short summ about the movie tho' for those who have yet to hear about this movie
Sanjay Ramasamy (Surya) is a big businessman who falls in love with a model Kalpana (Asin). Like Sanjay, Kalpana also espouses the cause of the poor. Eventually she runs into trouble with a gang that supplies girls to Mumbai as she exposes them. A retaliatory attack by the gang led by Lakshman (Pradeep Rawat) kills Kalpana. Sanjay, who tries to save her got hit on the head, which causes a memory loss. He can remember things only for 15 minutes. So, Sanjay, who is on the lookout for the killer gang, tattooes the names, mobile numbers, addresses, etc. on his body and takes photos with his Polaroid camera to remember things! Sanjay is helped by medical student Chitra (Nayanthara). How he manages to get even with the gang forms the climax. Cool yeah!
And yup made a bet with Vicky & won, France's Zidane scored one against Portugal during last nite's World Cup semis ^-^ $$$
over and out for now!

Seventh of July

that's all I'm gonna say at the moment!!!
heheheheheh !! *evil laugh* mmmwwwaaaahahahahah!!

That's one milk, to go please!

Ai yo! Life's so super busy lately, with work & etc. So busy that Niki drinks her breakfast milk on the go sometimes actually not sometimes more like today. She stayed up with us to watch CSI:NY and all of us headed to bed at 11pm. And our little missy didn't wake up till 9 this morning, of course havoc ensued and seeming that Vicky and I were already late for work we just bundled her up into my jeep and all of us went off to work together. Niki's going to spend the day at her amama like she always do.
I'm not complaining but sometimes I really pity the poor dear waking up so early and then rushing off to work with us. I can't wait for the time when I can finally be at home with her all the time, but that's next year till then we shall soldier on!!! Can't wait till I spend every minute with my two darlings.. at home xoxo

Niki's Blankie

this is my blankie!
the purple knitted blankie upclose ;-)

niki & blankie heading into the loo

Niki has one fave blankie which she drags wherever she goes, its a purple knitted one and there's only one place where this particular type is sold, she's been sleeping with it since she arrived at the hospital, so it's no wonder that she's attached to it, when she was a baby that's the blankie that I tucked her in with, and it's kinda worn now but she loves them & I feel all fuzzy when I see her burying her face into it & smells it like its a batch of newly baked cookies.

I found this particular article about security objects that I'd like to post here, so that I may look back years later and still remember;

Baby Blanket Bingo

Since 1952, Peanuts comic strip character Linus Van Pelt has found comfort in his baby blue "security" blanket. If that image of lovable Linus is likeable to your child, there's no reason to worry that this common habit is a bad one.

"Studies have shown that children who are attached to security blankets are securely attached to their mothers and psychologically healthy," says Dr. Julie Lumeng, of the University of Michigan's Center for Human Growth and Development in Ann Arbor, Mich. "The same studies show that when these children are in stressful or new situations – for example a new playgroup, preschool, going to the doctor's office, a babysitter – that if they have a security blanket they are much better able to keep themselves calm than children who do not have such an object. These children are actually better able to socialize, to learn and to regulate their emotions when they have a security blanket."

Becky Povinelli, a mother of three daughters from Indianapolis, Ind., recalls her youngest daughter's connection to her "blankie," which was a handmade gift from a family friend when Jenny was born. "It was in Jenny's crib when she was a newborn and then she literally carried it with her everywhere as a toddler," she says. "It really provided a sense of security for her."

According to Dr. Lumeng, studies of children's attachments to blankets have shown that their habit is most intense between 18 and 24 months of age, declining from there. However, at 36 months, more than half of children are still attached to their blankets. "There is no specific age at which a child should no longer be attached," says Dr. Lumeng. "Children can retain their affection for a cherished attachment object like a blanket well into adolescence. In fact, how many adults still keep a childhood attachment object in a trunk in the attic for the sentimental value?"

Lynn Smith, a mother of three from Houston, Texas, says her oldest daughter's security blanket was a cherished object that she still remembers more than a decade later. "I bought my daughter's blanket at a craft show before she was born," she says. "It was a handmade blanket with a lace border in a colorful wrapped-candy print. She slept with it as a baby and carried it everywhere with her in the toddler years. She had one special corner that she would wrap around her hand, then suck part of the blanket along with her thumb. She could even find this corner in the dark. She told us it smelled different. Her blanket had to go everywhere with her, or she would not sleep. As soon as she could grab for things, we knew that this would be her special blanket. We just recently found this blanket while cleaning out our closets. She is now 13, but still remembers it."

Emotions in MotionDr. Lumeng reports that the biggest question on the minds of most parents who are concerned about their child's blanket attachment is: When would you expect a child to stop using the object regularly and in public settings? She says this answer often varies, depending on the emotional development of the child.

"There is no hard and fast rule about this, but generally speaking, at the outside limits, you would expect a child who is still bringing their blanket to the kindergarten classroom to be able to reduce their reliance on it within those first few months," she says. "For children who are shy or inhibited or easily overwhelmed, a security blanket is a wonderful tool. If the goal of early childhood is to help children develop the ability to regulate their emotions (to stop from falling apart into a tantrum when a parent drops them off at childcare or a child pushes them) and having a security blanket assists them in doing so, it is a wonderful tool."

Dr. Lumeng also notes that recent studies support the benefits of a child being attached to a blanket. "Children primarily use these attachment objects or 'transitional objects' like blankets as they are falling asleep, and it helps them to do so," she says. "If a 10-year-old still has a special blanket in bed with him/her that is part of their bedtime ritual or routine and it helps them fall asleep, there is no reason (psychological or otherwise) that a parent should feel the need to take it away. This should be the child's choice. Second, studies have shown that children's use of security blankets varies based on their temperament. Temperament is thought to be an inborn character trait – a way of responding to certain situations. In other words, does the child 'jump in' to a new situation, or is the child 'slow to warm up,' or is the child persistently very shy? All of these behaviors are in the normal range, and all have good and bad things about them."
Blanket Be Gone Many parents also worry about the sociological or psychological disadvantages in their child using a blanket past a certain age. According to Dr. Lumeng, time is usually on the child's side in that respect.

"Generally, children who still are using a security blanket regularly and outside the home when entering preschool or kindergarten will start to feel some social pressure to stop using it sometime during these years," she says. "So many children will reduce their use of the security blanket in preschool simply by modeling other children in the classroom they admire."

As her daughter neared kindergarten age, Smith was pleasantly surprised to find how simple it was to wean her from the security blanket. "We started talking with her about two weeks before her 4th birthday," she says. "We explained to her that on her birthday, she needed to give it to us to put away for her. We talked about this a lot, and she agreed. I honestly didn't think she would be able to do it, but on her birthday morning, she brought us the blanket and said goodbye. We put it up and that was the end of it. I'm sure a lot of parents wish it was that easy for them – I think we just got lucky! I do think that talking to her about it like she was a big girl and associating giving it up with something positive (her birthday), it made it easier."

Obviously Linus and his blanket attachment is an entirely different story.

Share the LoveFor parents seeking creative ways to wean their children from their blankets, they can look no further than man's best friend.

Apart from rewarding the behavior you want, as opposed to punishing the behavior you don't want, some families have also found it useful when the child is ready to give up the blanket to 'give the blanket to someone,'" says Dr. Julie Lumeng, of the University of Michigan's Center for Human Growth and Development in Ann Arbor, Mich. "For example, maybe the family has just gotten a new puppy, and the puppy needs a blanket."
If the family's new bundle of joy is an infant, rather than a puppy, Dr. Lumeng does not suggest the above blanket-ridding method. "I generally wouldn't recommend giving the blanket to a new baby in the family," she says. "It is already difficult enough for a child to adapt to a new baby in the family without giving his security object to the new baby that is already 'threatening.'"

Dr. Lumeng also offers the following advice for parents when approaching the subject of "no more blankie" without causing too much distress for the child:
Slowly removing is best. For example, the first step is reducing to just "falling asleep time." Short of giving the child other tools to calm him down before removing the only tool he has – the "blankie" – the next intervention would be to institute a reward system.
Punishment is not the way to go. Reward works much better. For example, to begin with, a parent could give a child a reward if they can successfully "leave the blanket on the counter" for one hour (or shorter if needed). The time can be progressively increased as the child succeeds. Eventually, the child can "leave the blanket in your cubby" for the morning.

Occasionally, the child, when upset, may need to go back and get the blanket to calm him for a short while. But then, after the child is calmed and engaged in another activity, the child should be encouraged to put the blanket back in his cubby and given praise for doing so. Eventually, the child should be able to progress to using the blanket less, and the child will forget about the rewards and just use it less automatically.
